Sockeye (Red) Salmon Fishing on the Kenai River of Alaska

All five species of salmon in Alaska have two different names. Sockeye salmon
are also known as Red Salmon by both locals and those visitors who frequent the rivers of Alaska to catch this marvelous fish. Pound for pound, no salmon fights more fiercely than the red salmon. Red salmon runs on the Kenai River frequently exceed more than 1 million fish each year during the second run and at the peak are virtually head to tail and 3 or more fish deep along the banks.
The two Red Salmon runs on
the Kenai river typically are:
First Run (smaller) -- in mid-June at the confluence of the Kenai and Russian Rivers.
Second Run (largest by far)
-- from about July 8th through the second week of August with the usual peak during the last 2 weeks of July. However good fishing occurs during other times of the run and the peak can come early or late.
As red salmon are bank runners (they usually hug the banks of rivers rather than running up the middle of rivers), fishing for them is normally done from the shore or gravel bars. Silver salmon also run the shoreline and their run starts in mid-August and continues through the end of October.
